New York Vacation Rentals – New York Travel
With so much to do, a trip to New York is not to be missed. From the big city to the lake region to history, you can easily fill your trip roster.
You might visit the Empire State Building or head for the bright lights of Times Square while in New York City. What about a visit to the Five State Lookout in East Windham or the Howe Caverns in Howes Caves? Whatever your intent, you will likely fulfill it here.
New York City/Long Island
For a metropolitan vacation, head for the "Big Apple" and the surrounding area. New York City has long been a leader in fashion, finance, entertainment, nightlife and culture. With a rich mix of cultures and ethnic groups, it is the true melting pot. On Long Island, you'll find a similar diversity with the North Shore region celebrating a bountiful history, especially from the 18th to 20th centuries. On the South Shore, entertainment and sports fans will find plenty to enjoy and then find rest on the Fire Island and Jones Beach areas. Central Suffolk, South Fork and North Fork all have more of a forest feel coupled with an agricultural, beach and charming town landscape.
Western New York
There's lot of activities in this area of New York. You might head to the American side of the Niagara Falls, or visit Jamestown and the Lucy-Desi Museum, which celebrates the life of Lucille Ball. For varied activities and a great scenic view, visit the Chautauqua Lake area. In Lewiston, visit Artpark, a National Historic Landmark with fishing, hiking, a performing and visual arts entertainment center and several archaeological sites. Finally, there's Buffalo. Here you can experience history, entertainment or culture. You might enjoy Buffalo wings at the birthplace of the popular food, the Anchor Bar. The Chippewa Entertainment District offers excellent nightlife.
Catskills/Hudson Valley Region
For gorgeous art and nature, head for this area. At Historic Catskill Point in Catskill, you can enjoy a scenic park along with an on-site interpretive center. The Catskill region is home to many art galleries and centers, while the busy mountain recreation can keep you busy whether you visit in the summer or winter. Outdoor fun ranges from ice climbing to hang-gliding in Ulster, which bridges the Catskill area and the Hudson River. You can visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home National Historic Site in Duchess County, or visit West Point in Orange County. In Westchester County, enjoy the varied manor homes, castles and mansions there.
Northern New York
This area is home to Lake Ontario, the mountains and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Many fishing tournaments are held in the Watertown area, as well as many other outdoor activities. Sandy Island Beach Park in Oswego County is home to the only major dune facing fresh water in the Northeastern United States. Kayaking, fishing, bird watching and canoeing are popular here as well. The 1,000 Islands region is a great resort area, while the St. Lawrence area offers several agri-tours. The Adirondack area offers a wealth of sports and other activities year round, while also offering historic sites such as the Olympic facilities in Lake Placid and Fort Ticonderoga.
Finger Lakes Region
There are so many traveler options in this area. In Syracuse, you might take a tour of the Carrier Dome, the largest domed stadium on any college campus; visit the Everson Museum of Art, the first museum build by I.M. Pei, or head for Armory Square, an historic entertainment and shopping district. In Rochester, take in the renowned lilac festival or a super fast ferry connecting Rochester with Toronto, Canada. You might visit the George Eastman House or the Susan B. Anthony House. Lechtworth State Park, called the Grand Canyon of the East, offers lots for the nature lover, while more than 70 wineries offer a wine trail, sampling and shopping. Marvel at glass making at the Corning Museum of Glass.
Central Leatherstocking/Albany-Saratoga
Albany is the capital of New York and will appeal to the art lover, while in Saratoga visitors can head for the Saratoga Race Course, a well-known thoroughbred racing track, or head for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, which hosts the New York City Ballet and other performers. Sports lovers will love Cooperstown with its Baseball Hall of Fame and Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum. At the Roberson Museum and Science Center, visitors can take an interactive tour and then enjoy a Spieidie sandwich, a local favorite.
Defining New York state
There are two distinct cultures in the state of New York -- the ultra hip, ultra fast lifestyle of New York City and the area sitting on the Atlantic Ocean, and the quiet, simple living offered by the upstate area. Any visitor to this great state would be well advised to visit both for full New York experience.
